4th of July

So I've been cooking really American lately- not on purpose, really, but this is the food that's in season. In fact almost everything in my refrigerator is local produce, either from the farm or the farmers' market. It's really exciting, actually; that common veil of ambiguity as to where exactly this pepper or tomato or watermelon came from has given way to the faces of Texas farmers, and my own labor on the farm.  There ain't no organic bell peppers from Belgium in my house.
So, I made a watermelon (farmers' market), cantaloupe (free from the farm!), lime, lemon, coconut, agave nectar drink
Some yummy chili with Texas peas, tomatoes, corn, yellow squash, and locally-made corn tortillas
and this beautiful tomato salad, with local yellow tomatoes, red salad tomatoes, bell pepper, white onion, and Texas olive oil, all from the farmers' market
look at those colors!
Of course, I owe much to those foreign places where the coconut milk (Thailand!) and feta cheese (Bulgaria!) and agave (Mexico! not that far...) came from. I think I've got a nice local-to-foreign ratio going here....
and there's a bird in the house- he's cute cute cute. Hope all the fireworks didn't wake him up!
